South Africa is the longest trip most of our clients take in business class, fourteen to seventeen hours nonstop or closer to twenty with a connection, and it is the trip where the seat matters most. It is also a route with fewer nonstops than Europe and more ways to get there than people expect: two American airlines fly direct, and half a dozen of the world's best business class products connect through Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, London or Amsterdam. Which one is right depends on where you start, which destination you're heading to, and how you feel about a stop halfway. Select Business Class is a travel agency that books published and unpublished business class fares on every airline flying between the US and South Africa, for less than you'll find on the airline's site. Here is how the options work.
| City | Airport | Round trip from New York |
|---|---|---|
| Cape Town | CPT | from $2,912* |
| Johannesburg | JNB | from $2,965* |
| Durban | DUR | from $3,053* |
*Estimated round-trip fare per person from New York, not a quote. The estimates do not reflect season or competition between airlines, so which city is cheapest on your dates may differ. Terms below.
Delta One flies nonstop from Atlanta to both Johannesburg and Cape Town. The Cape Town flights are nonstop both ways, and the return to Atlanta is about sixteen hours. United Polaris flies nonstop from Newark to both cities, and from Washington Dulles to Cape Town. Both are lie-flat with direct aisle access, and both are the fastest way to get there from the East Coast.
One thing that surprises people: South African Airways no longer flies to the US. If you've been searching for South African Airways business class from New York or Washington, those routes haven't come back, and the direct options today are Delta and United.
Everyone else connects through a hub, and the connecting carriers are where some of the best business class seats in the world are:
Cape Town is where most leisure travelers are going: Table Mountain, the Winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, the Cape Peninsula and the Garden Route. It has direct flights from Atlanta, Newark and Washington and the widest choice of one-stop connections, so business class to Cape Town is often no more expensive than to Johannesburg. See our page on business class flights to Cape Town for routes in detail.
Johannesburg (JNB) is South Africa's main hub and the gateway for Kruger National Park, the private game reserves around it, and onward flights to Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia. For a safari, this is usually where travelers land. See our page on business class flights to Johannesburg.
Durban has no US flights. Emirates, Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines fly there from their hubs, and Ethiopian flies Addis Ababa to Durban from December 2026. It's the airport for the KwaZulu-Natal coast and the Drakensberg.
New York to South Africa means United from Newark, direct to either city, or a one-stop on Emirates, Qatar, Turkish, British Airways, Virgin, KLM or Air France from JFK. That's the widest choice in the country, and it's where business class tickets to South Africa are most competitive.
Atlanta to South Africa is Delta's hub and, like Newark, has direct flights to both main airports on the same airline. Washington to South Africa has United direct to Cape Town and one-stops on nearly every connecting carrier.
Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Boston and Seattle have no direct flights, so the choice is which hub. From the West Coast, Emirates, Qatar and Turkish usually win on seat. From the Midwest and Texas, a connection through Europe or Doha is often the easier overnight. We price all of them, including a domestic connection to Atlanta or Newark for the direct flight, and tell you which is shorter door to door.
Most South Africa trips aren't one city. The classic combination is a few days on safari near Kruger and a few in Cape Town and the Winelands, and the best way to book it is an open-jaw ticket: fly into Johannesburg, out of Cape Town, or the other way round, with the domestic flight in between. On most business class fares it costs about the same as a round trip to one city, and it saves a full day of backtracking. We also book complex itineraries with Victoria Falls, Botswana or Mauritius on the same ticket, and we'll tell you where a stopover in Dubai, Doha or Istanbul breaks up the flight at no extra fare.
Looking for cheap business class flights to South Africa? The cheapest business class flights to South Africa depend on three things more than anything else.
South Africa's seasons are the reverse of ours. December and January are peak, because that's summer on the Cape and the holidays everywhere, and business class fares are at their highest. June through August is winter, the dry season in Kruger and the best time for a safari, and it's also when fares to the Cape are lowest. March to May and September to November are the sweet spot: good weather in both places and fares well below December's.
The Delta and United direct flights are the fastest but rarely the cheapest. A one-stop on Emirates, Qatar, Turkish or Ethiopian is often substantially less, the seat is as good or better, and a two or three hour stop in a hub lounge in the middle of a twenty-hour trip isn't the worst thing. We quote both and let you decide what the time is worth.
Delta, United and the Gulf and European carriers all sell part of their business class cabins to South Africa through contract fares that never appear on their own websites or on flight search engines. On a route this long the savings are large in dollars: those unpublished fares are how our clients get discounts of up to 70%* on published fares. Fare rules can differ from the airline's own, mostly around changes and refunds, and your agent walks you through them before you book.
No airline flies first class direct between the US and South Africa. First class flights to South Africa mean connecting through a hub that has it: Emirates first class via Dubai is the most popular choice, with a private suite on both legs on many routes, and British Airways first via London is the other. For a honeymoon or a once-in-a-lifetime safari, we quote it against business class on the same route so you can see what the difference buys.
Send your route and dates with the form on this page, or call us on +1 (888) 424-4968. A dedicated agent calls back, usually within the hour, with two or three options, typically a direct flight and the best one-stop, so you can weigh time against price. Choose one, complete the secure booking form, and the confirmation is in your inbox the same hour. For a trip this far from home, the same agent stays reachable 24/7 by phone for changes and anything that comes up.
Our agency is IATAN accredited and a registered Florida Seller of Travel, with a Trustpilot rating of 4.8 out of 5. Round-trip business class is the most common booking, but we also book one-way tickets, business and first class combinations, and open-jaw itineraries across southern Africa.

FAQ
Can't find your answer? An agent picks up around the clock.
Delta from Atlanta and United from Newark, both to Johannesburg and Cape Town, plus United from Washington Dulles to Cape Town. South African Airways doesn't currently fly to the US.
About 14 to 17 hours direct from Atlanta, Newark or Washington. With a connection, 20 to 24 hours total depending on the hub, less from the East Coast via Europe.
Cape Town for the city, the Winelands and the coast. Johannesburg for Kruger and a safari. If you're doing both, fly into one and out of the other on the same ticket, and pick the destination with the cheaper direct flight for the long leg home.
For a direct flight, Delta One or United Polaris. With a connection, Qatar's Qsuite, Emirates and Turkish Airlines are the ones clients ask for by name. The best fare on your dates often decides it, and we'll tell you which seat and aircraft you're getting before you book.
June through August, which is also the best season for a safari. December and January are the most expensive.
Yes, with a connection. Emirates first class via Dubai and British Airways first via London are the two main options. No airline flies first class direct from the US.
Once the form with your preferred city pairs and travel dates is submitted, an agent will reach out to gather additional preferences and present the best available options. To secure a flight, simply complete the booking form sent via email.

Your dedicated agent and our 24/7 customer-care service will assist you with all the questions that you might have after booking a ticket.
On average, tickets are issued and sent to the client’s email within approximately one hour from the moment of the booking. Throughout the process, we provide regular updates to keep you informed and ensure peace of mind.
Most business and first-class tickets offer a high level of flexibility. However, before completing the booking, your agent will inform you of any exchange, refund, or other applicable restrictions, if there are any.
